Hello and welcome...
Greasby Shotokan Karate Club is a Karate club on the Wirral, established by Stuart Amos Sensei, a National, European and World Karate Champion. We are proud to be affiliated to the HDKI.
Greasby Shotokan Karate Club teaches traditional, Shotokan Karate, in a fun, challenging and safe environment with an emphasis on spirited training.
The Kanji, (the Japanese writing), in our logo means ‘Work Hard’ and something we strive to demonstrate, be it in the Dojo, in school or in the work place is that with hard work, we can achieve anything.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us or find us on Facebook for frequent updates, (https://www.facebook.com/GreasbyShotokanKarateClub).
About Us
Stuart Amos Sensei started Karate in 2000, training with Linden Huckle Sensei. Falling in love with the martial art, he never looked back. After 11 years of training, Stuart Sensei made the step of moving to Liverpool to continue his training. Watch the above clip for Stuart Sensei’s introductory interview from www.shotokankarateonline.com to learn more about him and his Karate journey.
Stuart Sensei was selected onto the England Squad in 2012 and has competed as part of the team ever since, achieving enormous success both nationally and internationally. One of his proudest moments was when he, alongside his team mates, won the Team Kata event in Portugal in 2013, just the first of many placements in international competition.
Stuart Sensei achieved his 5th Dan in 2023. Having taught at the University of Liverpool Karate Club since 2011, Stuart Sensei is an experienced and knowledgeable instructor and is often invited to teach on courses across the UK. He is as passionate about his Karate now as he ever was and takes enormous pride in seeing his students achieve their full potential, both in Karate and their day-to-day lives.
In 2020, Stuart Sensei joined the HDKI and is excited and proud to take Greasby Shotokan Karate Club forward within the organisation.
Karate
Karate is a system of self-defence and physical culture originally developed and refined in Okinawa and Japan. The word is formed from the Japanese words Kara (empty) and Te (hand), symbolising that its practitioners – Karateka – are unarmed, but use their hands and feet for blocking and striking. Training is conducted within an environment and code based on Japanese cultural practices, which are explained in more detail further on.
There are various styles of Karate and Shotokan is the most widely practiced style in the world. The originator of Shotokan was Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan school teacher, who first demonstrated his style of Karate in Japan in 1921. The following year he moved to Japan to teach and was elected honorary Head of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) when it was formed in 1949.
